As you know we are fighting
to stop religious
arbitration in Ontario, and
prevent it from happening in
the Maritime Provinces. We
are very happy to announce
that Premier Dalton McGuinty
has announced that there
will be no religious
arbitration in Ontario!
See the link below for a news article on this subject:
While this has been a very
important victory, we would
like to complete our mission
by having Justice Minister
Baker in Nova Scotia make a
statement that Nova Scotia,
too, will not allow
religious arbitration. We
are meeting him on Thursday,
September 29th.
We are going to have a
meeting on Monday, October
3rd at 5:30 and what we
discussed our approach with
minister. We will meet in
room 104 LAW Building
Dalhousie University. We are
inviting everyone to attend
this meeting.
We hope to see you there!

SECOND ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL
DEMONSTRATION
against
SHARIA
COURT
IN CANADA
for
WOMEN’S RIGHTS, SECULARISM AND
HUMAN DIGNITY
It has been a year since
the International Campaign
against Sharia Court in Canada,
called for a day of protest,
nationally and internationally,
against faith based courts in
Ontario. The protestors wanted
the Ontario to remove family law
from the 1991 Arbitration Act.
The Campaign worked hard to
inform the general public and
the ministries in charge about
the high risks of permitting
Sharia courts in Ontario.
Unfortunately, despite all the
warnings, the government of
Ontario has not taken a clear
position to prevent the
interference of religious
institutions in the judicial
system.
The Second International
Demonstration opposing Sharia
and all faith based
courts in Ontario will be
held on September 8th,
2005.
We call upon all concerned
individuals and progressive
organizations to join us in
opposing the Ontario Arbitration
Act 1991 which allows religion
to interfere in
Join us! Together, let us raise
our collective voice for
progressive change! We can and
must make a difference!

Membership Drive
The MSLNA will hold its first membership meeting on
April 22nd, 2005 at the Dalhousie Law School Room 104, 6061 University
Avenue at 6:00 – 8:00 PM. At the meeting we will discuss the issue of religious adjudication and how we plan to oppose this troubling development. We will also
look for new members to join our association.
The adoption of religious law in family dispute adjudication must be
stopped. The practice erodes Canadian women’s and children’s rights
and is potentially racist. The Maritime Secular Legal Network
Association (MSLNA) is working together with legal organizations,
women’s groups, and citizen rights advocates across Canada to end
this practice in our country – to keep Canada a secular state.
Please come to the meeting to get more information and to join this
important cause, which all of us living in a multicultural country
like Canada must contribute to.
Please, reply to this Email if you want to be informed of news and
events relating to this cause.
